Cities can develop for many different reasons. Most common at this time was the cities that formed along the transcontinental railroad in mining towns. In the case of Salt Lake City, the people of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints were seeking religious freedom after much persecution in the midwest. Here in Salt Lake the president of the church, Brigham Young, felt that a temple of God should be built and among the next forty years of construction a beautiful city was developed as well.
